Before you fly: your travel-health appointment checklist
Good travel advice starts with the trip you’re actually taking. Bring the whole itinerary, including stopovers, so the consultation can consider more than a country name.

The short answer
What to know first
- Aim to seek travel-health advice at least 4–6 weeks before departure.
- Bring destinations, dates, stopovers, vaccine history and your medicine list.
- Ask about course costs, further doses and any certificate requirements before booking.
Start planning before departure gets close
The NHS recommends seeking advice at least 4–6 weeks before travel: some vaccines involve several doses, while others need time to provide protection. If you are leaving sooner, contact a travel-health professional promptly to discuss what can still be considered.
Set aside the appointment details with your other trip documents. If more than one dose is proposed, check the dates against your departure, work and any other travel plans.

Bring a picture of the whole trip
Use this checklist to prepare for the discussion. It helps the team understand the itinerary and ask the right questions; it does not decide which vaccines or medicines you personally need.
- Every destination, region, travel date and stopover
- Length of stay, accommodation and planned activities
- Vaccination records, including any yellow fever certificate
- Current medicines, supplements and allergies
- Health conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding or a weakened immune system
- Questions about travelling with children or another family member

Ask for a clear vaccination and prevention plan
Some travel vaccines are available free through the NHS at GP surgeries after assessment; others are privately funded. Confirm what is available through your GP and what the private clinic would charge. Ask whether the quoted price covers each dose, the full course, consultation and any certificate.
For private travel care at Brick Lane, our East London Travel Clinic website brings together destination guidance and guide prices. The team confirms availability and your individual plan. You can also read current country information directly from TravelHealthPro before the visit.
Keep a written record of the plan: appointments still needed, records to bring back, any prevention advice to follow and where to seek help if a question comes up before departure.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
Is the same vaccination advice right for everyone visiting a country?
No. The itinerary, health history, previous vaccines and activities all matter. Country information is a starting point for an individual consultation.
Should I still ask for advice if my trip is soon?
Yes. Contact a travel-health professional promptly. Explain the departure date so the team can discuss what may still be possible and any limitations.
